With these crazy warm temps I decided to go back to pallet wood for a while. Why not????..Don't want to waste my ash or maple. Haven't even touched my Black locust, apple or oak yet. If this winter keeps up like this...won't have too. Save it for next year. Burned just about 1 full cord so far, thought for sure it would be way more by now. This is not normal.

It would be a great thing if people would have enough wood left to burn next year. The sad part would be those who would not take advantage and get themselves 2 or 3 years ahead on wood. But this winter so far has been one of the most ideal for getting ahead on your wood supply.

I was worried; life got in the way and I only had 2 1/2 cord stocked up going into this winter (which had been the least I burned in 4 years) so I was quite nervous and stocked up on more pallets then usual. I have 3 1/2 cord for next winter and at this rate I might have the other 1/2 left over from this year to give me 4 cords for next year which would make me happy.

Burned dozen pallets which is a record this year. Free pallets = free heat = happy Dave It's actually kind of fun to see the stove become ablaze quickly and stove top settle at 650 and two hours later repeat. A few slats of pallets are a lot lighter then a few splits.

As much as I like heating with wood; became another hobby for me, can't say that I'm upset about the temps.

I stocked up on about 100 pallets last year. Burned about 1/2 so far. They are all free from a local K-Mart down the road. Most of my regular wood is free as well. The church I go to sits on about 45 acres of land. Me and a friend just keep clearing the dead and dying trees. Lots of ash and cherry. Already have about 5 face cords cut, split and stacked in one of the churches garages. Just have to go get it...Great Blessing

Your a lucky man NordicSplitter... It's a good idea with the pallets! It does'nt get too hot with that wood? What part of the country you live in? Haha...just realized I could look over to the left and see where. OOfta.

How do you go about dismantling pallets? I mean, do you remove every single nail or do you toss planks into the stove, nails and all?

Just a reminder to some folks. Depending on where you live pallets may be constructed of chemically treated wood. Normally chemically treated wood can be spotted easily and SHOULD bear markings however its not always the case.

I have been burning scrap wood as well. One fire with scrap in the evening and one in the morning the sun heats the house from 9:00 AM to sunset. 4 logs at night.

A few miles from us a contractor was building a huge stick frame building. They got it all framed up, trusses put on and we had a big wind storm. The next time I went by the whole place was a pile of sticks. Looked like a giant dumped a box of tooth picks on the slab. A few days ago I went by and now all that wood is in a big pile.

I am thinking about stopping by sometime and asking if I can start hauling some of that wood. I bet there is enough to build my kids a playhouse and have firewood.

I was referring to.....really...what do you guys pay for better wood??? Not trying to be funny about the pallets... I'm really curious as to what ya'll pay for good or great wood? Thanx Jeff

Before I hit the mother load at church I paid $45 a face cord for ash, $50 a face cord for apple, cherry and some elm. As far as dis-mantling the pallets...a circular saw at about 8am on saturday mornings is a nice way to say hello to my neighbors! Haha. I don't worry about staples or nails at all......One more thought for free wood......Contact your town highway supervisor. Every town has a tree trimming budget allotted to them at the beginning of the year. Tell him you have a wood burning stove and would like all of the wood from the town trimming and removing trees. Its easier for them to dump it on your front lawn than to take it back to their yard and mulch it up and dispose of it. I'm on the this for this year and until I cry uncle, the wood will just keep coming.

i burn splits, rounds, pallets, branches, and slabwood.. its all good heat. but boy with the addition of this slabwood this year wow it makes the fire nice fast, same with some pallet. i dont know if i could ever go back to just splits and rounds anymore. mostly just use them to get me them long burns anymore.

Could not agree more. I used to be out in the wood shed every morning trying to split a small split even smaller for a 2 hour fire till the sun starts heating the place. Now I just run out grab a handful of scrap, toss it in and a minute later I have a hot fire burning. I get secondaries after about 4 minuets.

I pick up pallets to have a supply of wood for the shop on chilly mornings. Years ago the place I put in my time had 25HP motors come in on two inch thick oak pallets. The guys in receiving saved them all for me and it was sweet burning.

Grapple load mixed hardwood, Maple,Beech,Oak (7-8 cord) delivered for $850.

25 yrs in the trucking industry, most pallets I seen are made of some form low grade hardwood, except for those chep pallets, so I don't see a problem burning them. I just wished I had saved all of them that I gave away or disgarded.
