I was splitting some dead standing ash today and I came across this little guy. Apparently they are a good type of beetle and they eat the bad ones plus the larvae? I didn't know there were good beetles... these things can survive in temps as low as -238F!!!!! read the link its quite interesting

Hmm, I've never seen that type of bark beetle in our ash here but there are smaller ones that attack an ash pretty much as soon as it's cut down.

So far so good with the EAB here, fingers crossed it stays that way.

We have EAB pretty bad here so its nice to see that these beetles plus the woodpeckers helping try to save the Ash.

I heard of a little wasp (from elsewhere) that the scientists wanted to introduce to fight the EAB. Hadn't heard of a beatle that could attack the EAB though. It's too late around here at any rate, the ash trees are already gone.

Gee Reckless, that wood doesn't look to be worth saving. Let the bugs have it.

Good Beatles...

Love the shot and your avatar. Reminds me of the world's most tasteless joke-- What do Papillon and Yoko have in common? Both live off dead beetles. Ouch!

Give them all this??? NEVER!! Gotta get the dead standers now before its too late.... MUST PROCESS WOOD

Well, we're still cutting dead standers too but they aren't that far gone yet. Fortunately we've got most of the larger ones and only the small ones to go but they take more time so some no doubt will be left for the bugs and woodpeckers.
