Day one... This is the old ZC fireplace..

With header removed and drywall cut away..

Yeah.. my chimney chase cap was rusted, so I figured I'd replace everything...

Day two... Guinness left out of the pics by accident... Opened up the top of the alcove..

And temporarily blocked off the chimney exit through the fireblock..

Tomorrow I need to figure out how to fix the right side wall of the chase as there is quite a bit of water damage from a bad flashing job on the roof (done before I bought the house)..

Will you be widening it slightly to meet clearances or are you ok?

I've got exactly an inch to spare.. Stove calls for 6" side clearance with side shields.. The framing is at 49 1/4", minus 1 1/4" for Type X drywall (overkill, but going for it) Leaves me at 48", and min alcove width is 47".

Do you have a plan for finishing it? A member here and co-worker of mine did this Bk alcove. It finished out really nice.

How much does that amount of stone veneer weigh?

I want to install a 90" X 88" area of a stone veneer like this in my install but I'm worried it will weigh too much.

Very interested in Gareth's install too Will be watching

I don't have the skills for that stone veneer, looks really nice but also would be way out of budget. Since my distances to combustibles are greater than the minimum, I was going to just leave the walls bare (painted type X). Then if they get too hot I'll do the Armstrong Metallaire ceiling tile panels.

That's fine too. There is no need for any special wall treatment if clearances are met. These stoves are tested to the extreme! The area around the stove will not be excessively hot, you can trust their testing.

I have a painted sheetrock wall within 6" of my BK's butt and it has never gotten hot. These cat stoves get hot mostly in one spot on top above the cat. You'll notice it when you see the stove top paint fade out.

So here's a pic of the water damage.. this is just what is below the fireblock. There's a t-shirt stuffed in a 4"x4" hole they left in the fireblock.. Expecting rain tomorrow so planning on tackling the rot on Thursday/Friday. Looks like I will have to take off the siding to do it properly since it's rotted all they way to the edge of the stud, good news is the stud seems pretty intact.

The ironic thing is that blue writing on the stud says "built with pride by Ben".....

Here's the rotten side.. about 1/3 of the black area is completely rotted through.. Will cut it out tomorrow and put new OSB & house wrap on, add some flashing, and put the siding back on.. luckily the studs are ok..

Wood replaced, new flashing, house cover.. Finished that part up today and got the siding back on, so back to interior work..

Read up on the alcove requirements and clearances for the 30NC first. Every stove is different.
