Bought my first Stihl!

And it's the first saw I've actually bought... all the others I have have been given to me non-running and gotten them running.

Anyways, a little Stihl MS170, seems in pretty good shape. Picked it up for $100 which is pretty good around here, usually people are asking that for a Homelite that doesn't run.

Was sort of wondering, took a look once I got there, fired right up after a few pulls but chain was on backwards Don't know if that's why he was selling it so cheap, but ah well. It'll be a perfect saw to keep in the back of the truck when I'm out with the kids and camping.

Is there any way to tell how old it is? Looks to have the 16" bar on it, bar says "picco" chain on it. What should I be looking to put on it for general cutting/firewood use?

Welcome to the club! I have a 170 for my little saw, it is a good, handy little unit. IIRC I paid $179 brand new for mine. I use it for as much as possible, until I need to get the big boy out

If I ever end up buying a new, bigger Stihl, it might be worth the trip south for the purchase. Here are the prices from my local dealer, how do they compare?

We got a little 180 last year and love it. Really a lightweight saw and has surprised us in how well it cuts. We have a 16" bar on it too. The only negative I have so far is that the chain does not seem to last very long and we had 2 teeth break on the first chain. Something we rarely see.

I've been very impressed my my little 170. It's my only saw currently so it gets pressed into service on trees that are perhaps larger than it's intended purpose but it always gets the job done. I just finished bucking up some 20"-24" gum with it

I have the MS180 and use it for everything I can. I see that the MS180 is unavailable at every local dealer I checked online thru Stihl. I suspect they are stopping production to push the MS181.

Anyone wanting an MS 170 better get it soon as I suspect it will also be replaced completely with newer style MS171 which is almost a pound heavier and cost $20 more.

Love mine too, thats what I use when I'm scrounging like yesterday. Perfect for that

I think you answered your own question as to why he was selling it so cheap. Probably thought it didn't cut worth a hoot.

What did the chain look like? Were the back ends of the cutters hammered?

Been using my 026 for almost 20yrs ( 80 cord?).

Keep it maintained and the chain sharp and it's a vicious machine

I really like my ms180 also. I use it more then my ms460 to be honest! I have also broken a couple of teeth off and am fairly sure it was due to me sharpening the teeth too low.
