It does. I burn mostly elder and empty my stove about once a week burning elder.

i don't find it to leave that much more than elm or russian olive. It takes a while to dry out, but it burns decently. some of it splits really nicely, some of it doesn't. the colors inside are great, and a lot of people do some cool carvings with it.

Especially if you don't have to pay for it!
 
Got to keep out of the sun if you want to preserve the color though. Box Elder and Silver maple pretty close to each other imop.
