Well technically they can share a chimney as long as that chimney has seperate flues for each.

And it may depend on where you are located.

Right or wrong . . . Maine made an allowance to have shared flues back in 2008 which goes against the code. To my knowledge that allowance is still on the books . . . but I am not positive.

It is only allowed in Maine if both appliances are approved for it. Which I don't know of any that do so it is still pretty much against code.
