Hi everybody. I’ve got a brand new Woodstock Stove Co. Ideal Steel. After activating the catalyst, I’m regularly getting 1400°+ catalyst temps according to the 3-12-1 Condar catalyst probe. I have a magnetic surface thermometer 18” up the single wall pipe. When the cat is engaged, surface temp of the pipe stays at about 275°-300°. I also have magnetic surface thermometers on multiple points of the stove. They’re all staying in range according to the stove’s manual. Do new cats burn hot or am I causing damage? This is my first time owning a hybrid stove. Any advice is appreciated.

Yes the new hyperactive cat thing comes up quite often and I have also personally seen it. It should settle down after about 100 hours of use.

300 on the pipe is actually pretty hot, can you turn it down? I keep 400 internal (200 external) on the pipe during long burns.

That said, even a well burned in cat can run at temperatures at the top of that scale. My catalyst is almost due for replacement based on age and it was cruising at the same temperature last night and I use the same condar cat meter except the shorter stem model and mounted vertically.

Enjoy that IS!
