Sorry, I tried to take a picture but that ain't happening. On both sides of the inside fire box, right below the chambers on both sides there is something peeling. It can't be cement, so I'm guessing its paint? As it peels it kinda burns and keeps peeling away. Any thoughts on this? Just started the stove for the evening from cold, its up to temp. Thx

Just got a pix when fire went down

[Hearth.com] Cement or paint peeling in stove?

Oh, there is not a crack in the stove. Its a shadow.

ya that looks like creostle

Yes, brand new. Break in period last wed, thurs, and friday, hot burns since. This its disturbing to me. I know the answer to this but I'm going to ask anyway. That shouldn't be there right? Well, looks like I'm going through the wood pile to find the culprit. I have truly seasoned wood in the middle of the shed and back, but when I cut dead standing wood, mm said below 20%. Perhaps to close to trunk pcs in stove. This may explain some of the problems I've been having while trying to get longer burn times. Backwoods savage ain't gonna like this.

I had alot of it during shoulder burns. It's creosote, nothing wrong with the stove.I brushed it right off with my small broom when stove was cool.

So even if you have properly seasoned wood does this still occur? There was one night when the burn was poor overnight. Glass was very black. Still learning.

Poorly seasoned wood and low burn temps will cause this buildup and darken your glass.I clean mine with a good 400 or 500 degree burn.Especially during shoulder burns it helps tp crank these things up once in awhile and clean em out. This is my 1st yr with burning and this stove is new to me so others can help you more than i can.It will clean up though with a good hot fire.I don't think they paint inside these stoves but i could be wrong.

I wouldn't worry too much . . . my Oslo did the same thing when I first had it . . . could be creosote, but I suspect it is what you first thought -- paint . . . I would guess maybe some overspray from when they painted the stove's cast parts . . . or perhaps Jotul sprays the inside as well as a protective coat. In either case, I wouldn't worry.

Oh man, Dennis is gonna' give you a talking to! Hide.....quick. You are SOOOOO fired.
Nah, that's not a big deal. Wait 'til you've been burning for a couple years, then show us the inside of the stove. It won't stay pretty.
You're doing all right, just keep an eye on things like you are.
I should take a pic of mine, but it wouldn't be the same, 'cause I burn an old air-tight (yeah, right) stove....pre-epa.

Its just last fires creosote burning off and flaking off, my stove will always have it. I have a catalytic model stove and as the fire cools it gets it i guess then the next time i load it it will heat back up and flake it off.

Normal for the inside of a stove. I get it all the time in my Keystone, usually from low burns. Turn the damper up and it burns off.

The real test is what is you chimney looking like. Once you get use to your stove and check the chimney from time to time, you will get a feel for if you need to brush once, twice or more a season. The inside of your stove getting some creosote build-up is not necessarily reflective of what's going up the pipe.

Good luck,
Bill
