I seldom need to use my backup boiler, which is currently oil. If it can be relatively inexpensively done, I'd like to switch to propane. Is there any way I can switch out the oil burner for a propane unit, or must I have a whole new boiler? I know the flame pattern is different, but does it make it impractical? I'm willing to forego some efficiency, since I seldom use the backup.

If your old boiler is in good shape (I assume it is) this can be worthwhile. Do you use LPG for anything else, ie cooking, cloths drying, hot water (summer) backup generator? Gas is more versatile and best of all doesn't go bad in the tank if not used in 5 years!

Your looking as something like a Carlin EZFlame etc. and will take around a 5% efficiency hit by using it on equipment designed for oil and not gas.

I really appreciate the reply, even more so because it's what I was hoping to hear. I've already got propane for my range, so it'll be a relatively cheap install.
