Cleaned The Boost Baffle On The PE....

"January Thaw", even had some windows open today !

Anyways.... hadn't cleaned out the boost baffle since fall, thought it was a good time, considering the temp drop later in the week.

Been a while


Wore my gloves in case it was still warm



Twas a little bit dirty, to say the least

Presto, chango !!



A little elbow grease, and voila

I wondered why the stove was sluggish, considering the cap & flue are clean ( go me !)



My able bodied assistant was slacking, big time



Lesson to the wise... clean your boost baffle !!

I can't go out the door on the farm without my 9 month old Jack coming,,, he's got to see everything going on...my 13 year old being almost totally blind isn't as demanding,,,they are just wonderful dogs! It's actually enjoyable to see them take a needed rest,,, you know they are tired then! Glad your stove is running like a top again!

You need a newer stove

Boost baffle is in the front of the PE, directly over the air flow control.

Full of ash =s lousy draft, and poor air flow.

Aaahhhh, never thought to clean that...I think I will right now!

Before almost every reload, I lift the boost manifold up and use it's own edge one side at a time, to push the ash out from in front of it, and also along the first few inches of the floor bricks. With welding glove on of course.

My experience with my T6, and I would assume other similar PE's, is that it burns much better with the stove and manifold boost baffle cleaned out. I used to clean weekly or greater, and now as frequently as possible, every cpl days or so. And like Hog, clean out area under the manifold boost baffle with the rake.

The last cpl yrs, with the warmer winters, this has been much easier to perform without the house cooling off too drastically.

Also, different types of wood seem to leave different qualities (and quantities) of ash, and where it builds up, which affect air circulation/burn quality.

Different types of wood do have an effect on the ash build up, as does that "iffy" moment when you ponder loading one more piece of firewood in the stove when loading E/W.

The glass is staying cleaner already, too.

ummm...so I need some education I guess. I have a PE pacific insert and I don't think I can locate this "boost baffle"? Can you provide some more guidance as to where it is located??? I am pretty sure I have had this stove apart to it's bones a few times.....

The boost baffle is right inside the doorway, at the bottom ( see pics above of it out). It almost looks like a piece of the stove, but it isn't.

I use my firewood "poker" to lift it out. Once out, you'll see the ash build up under there, prohibiting air flow up from the air control.

*Important info* when it goes back in, the holes go to the back of the stove, and it fits into the space provided by the "pegs" built into the stoves base at the front. Could take a few tries to get it back in there correctly.

There you go. If it was heavy ash build up you should see a huge difference !!

Here is the thing...i opened it up this morning as I was brewing my coffee. It came right out and there was some ash inside, but not what I was thinking would be in there. I have not removed this part (hangs head in shame) since I installed this stove in 2008.

I do shovel out ash quite regularly and don't let it build up....but I am surprised there was not more ash in there. My parents have a Summit in the basement I will check out tomorrow.

What else am I missing with my stove cleaning???
