Clearance to Top Trim - Replace with HardieTrim?

If I need a few extra inches of clearance to the 1" thick top trim, would cutting out some of the wood and replacing it with HardieTrim cement board be an acceptable solution? Any better ideas?

As it would look like wood, hopefully, I'm assuming some pic during the install would be needed to pass an inspection.

A mantel shield might be a better solution.
