We are attempting to to seal off an unfinished and used basement fireplace. It is below a finished and use fireplace in our living room. The basement firelplace lets in a lot of cold air, and we'd like to close it off and use the space for storage. How to we go about this?

The simplest would be to cap it on the chimney top and put in a chimney balloon in the damper area. Walmart sells them. I wouldn't seal it off permanently. Maybe at least allow for a thimble to be installed if a woodstove there in the future is a possibility.
