It is Saturday and colder than a nuns knee for this time of year (8 when I got up this am) I will be around all day. Is it more efficient to build a big fire in the morning and get my 8 hours of burn or "tend" a smaller fire all day? Time wise the bigger fire is way better but I am going to be here all day so it doesn't matter to me if I visit the garage 4 or 5 times.

I'm going to do the little fire from 1 PM to 10 PM. About 30 Lbs. of wood every 2-3 Hrs.

You're always going to be more efficient with a big fire...IF....you've got a place to put the heat, like a big heat load or a storage tank. If your big fire is going to idle much of the time, then it's better to tend a series of smaller fires. But if you can get the boiler to run full out and not idle very much, then go with the big load. Every time you open the door and toss in new wood, it robs you of efficiency. 'Course, that's not as much fun as fooling with the fire.
It's starting to snow pretty hard down here in the Mohawk Valley. Hopefully we'll get another 3 or 4 inches so I can ski tomorrow. You guys are due for your share early next week.
