Our fireplace looks as though it was originally a wood burning fireplace. What steps would we need to take to convert it back?

The first thing to do is to get it inspected by a certified professional sweep. It needs to be checked for integrity and safety to assert whether it is ok to revert back to wood burning.
Ask local stove shops about good sweeps in the area and before hiring, have them tell you what they do for an inspection and how much the charge will be. If there are no shops in your area you could use www.csia.org to search for a certified sweep.
