Question:

We would like some information on converting a Heatilator fireplace into a woodstove; such as, is it possible, best way to go about doing so etc...

Answer:

Heatilator Fireplace can mean a lot of things. Heatilator is a brand name, and they make

1. Steel forms for the inside of fireplaces. A complete masonry chimney is built around these forms.
2. Complete sheet-metal pre-fab (zero-clearance) fireplaces. These have metal fireboxes and chimney and are framed in with wood.

If you have #1, you can install most any stove or fireplace insert into it..it's really no different than an all-masonry fireplace.

If you have #2, you have to look for an insert which is approved to go into pre-fab fireplaces. In many cases, this means a smaller unit, since the inside of these fireplaces are smaller than masonry ones.

Either way, you're in business.
