converting propane fireplace to wood stove

We are down in Pennsylvania visiting friends, who ask me about converting their propane gas log fireplace to woodstove. I have advised them to seek out a licensed chimney sweep or stove installer to inspect the chimney and advise about conversion, as well as enlarging the hearth a bit to take the new stove.

Without knowing any details about the size of the chase or details of the liner used, I can't advise him any further.

Can members of this knowledgeable forum advise me about the kinds of issues which might come up and the economic issues my friends might face during such a conversion?

Without knowing EXACTLY what unit they currently have, it's kinda hard to get you the info you need.
Is there a manufacturer & model number listed on the unit?
If it's a gas fireplace either vented or vent-free, it's gonna hafta be COMPLETELY torn out.
The venting for a DV unit is not rated for a wood stove, & they V-F unit has none (duh)...
They will probably get off cheaper by installing a wood stove in a different location & keeping what they have for occasional use.

Thank you, Dacsy. We found the following:

"Superior The Fireplace Company" Model No. GRDE-8043P Serial No. 60048

It vents into an 8" insulated flue up to the roof.

Looks like Superior Fireplace was taken over by Lennox....


Will do more research later, but I think my friend still needs onsite inspection...
