Cooking with wood

When I did my burn in I got out my trusty 10" black iron skillet and cooked up some corned beef hash, scrambled 2 eggs and splashed on a liberal helping of Tabasco. Shared it with my FIL and 2yr old son. Boy was that a gratifying meal after putting in our stove this year!

What do you like to cook on your wood stove?

I do my home made chili at least once a season and I rise my home made bread with the stove also!

My youngest made a bunch of grilled cheese sandwiches on our old stove last winter. Not sure how that will work with the Ashford this year...

Chili! Awesome! Question... Can you bake your bread in a cast iron dutch oven inside the stove on the coals?

Pot roast with potatoes and carrots in the dutch oven. Below is a shot from years ago, haven't taken pictures in a while, will have to this winter. Also do chicken and gravy,,,,, mainly stuff that could be done in the crock-pot.

I'll also bake potatoes in the dutch oven on top of the stove. I keep a box of kosher salt around that gets used only for potatoes or roasting big chunks of squash, etc. Dump enough into the bottom of the dutch often to make a good deep layer, then throw the potatoes in, nestle them down a bit let them cook for 20 to 30 mins, then turn, until done (if whole) . Once cool, I save the salt and use it for next time.

Kind of miss being able to cook on the stove. The old stove ended up in the basement. I suppose if I did fire it up I could cart food down there to cook, but I dont think I'll be heating the basement this year. Can't cook on the insert lol, and the Shelburne has a nice enameled finish that I'd hate to even take the chance of scratching, especially since I am thinking of selling it. Why don't the put cooking plates on these stoves anymore? Of course the pellet stove wont be able to cook on top of it.

About 12 years ago when I still lived with my parents, Mom did the entire Christmas meal on the wood stove. Our electric had been out for 8 days straight, so we had a lot of meals cooked on the wood stove that winter, but the Christmas dinner was the most impressive.

Wow! That is impressive indeed! Your Mom must be very ingenuitive and a skilled cook. I bet that tasted extra good! Nothing like having options when the power is out.

She is a great cook. It's one of the things that annoys my wife the most. My wife is still a good cook, but she isn't quite up to my mom's level. At the same time I don't think my mom is as good as my grandma was....

Those are perfect for the wood stove!
