Custom made surround...

I'm not a fan of the blahness of the one size fits all surrounds. Add on the fact that my hearth is large round and unflat rock, there was no way I was going to put that up then look at all the gaps between it and the rocks.
I ran the first 2 yrs without one and didn't really mind it but it felt unfinished. Late last year the light bulb popped on. I'm all about the rustic vibe and I think this fits the bill. I've got about 1/4" gap on the top but you can't tell. Then on the sides it actually fits tightly against the rocks. So if I need to remove it all I do is tip it out and up..

Your factory panels could have been modified to fit the same way. We cut panels for an inside fit several times a year. Looks nice though.

True and I did consider it, but flat regular old black panels was just to blah for me which combined with my need to be different in about every aspect possible gave me this... At least this one didn't cost me as much as some of my other ideas

Was the floor stone new as well? I love floor stone. So hard to go away from the square tile look on the floor. I always worry about uneven surfaces and stubbing toes but when it is done right there is nothing better. Nice job. Always better when your done and you know you did it.

It's stamped or expanded metal mesh and yep 3/4" angle iron frame work.. I bought the mesh sheet and cut it down to size and cut out the center for the insert but I dont have a welder so had a local machine shop do it for me. All total was about 140,it wouldve been cheaper but when it was welded the first time the line above the insert was closer to the stove and using my temp gun threw the mesh was giving me incorrect readings so I had them cut that back apart and cut about 1/2" more off from the mesh then reweld.. Tedious and time consuming but worth it to me...

Floor stone was already here but it only comes out a little bit further from the picture so its too close to the wall/fireplace to ever really walk on. The floor stone is actually pretty level and smooth, its the mantle/wall stone that's uneven in the opening that was the bugger to work around...
