Cutting trees on 91 North in CT

On my way to a gig this morning in Hartford I got super sad when I saw tons of cut trees. It's too bad we can't rescue those suckers before they shred and or haul them away. Has anyone else seen them? They are on the North bound side of 91 on the left side of the road above Middletown and before Rocky Hill. Sad.

Haven't seen them. Are we not allowed to grab them?

They did the same thing on Route 9 between Old Saybrook and Essex

Actually you can take wood lying on the ground from any State of Ct property, parks or highways. I used to mow the highways in Ct as a sub-contactor for the DOT and they leave the wood there for a couple of weeks hoping somone will take it.

The safer bet is the roads in the sticks like Barkhamsted, New Hartford, and East Hartland. Northeast Utilities was ther all summer and the left wood everywhere.

I am in the same boat, no truck. I am currently on craigslist looking for a trialer for my suv

I have been in that area,back in 1995. I was painting that bridge, the Arigoni.(sp) lived in Middletown for a year. Nice place to visit. Too far for wood.

Scrounging wood from the center median on I 91 probably isn't the safest thing to do.

I haven't heard of what they do with it. When I've driven by, the trees have all been stacked together in bunches.

And man o man, they are clearing ALOT of trees.

Our local PC has been on a trimming campaign to keep the grid more reliable during weather. The result is LOTS of wood cut nicely on the side of the road. Every day I drive past cords only to wish I had a trailer for my SUV. Surprisingly, few people have bothered to grab the scores, as I think few in my town heat with wood. I may rent a trailer in a couple weeks to relocate fallen wood from my fathers house to mine, and if the road scores are available I will be certain to grab some.

Sounds like a nice scrounge, except for the messing around in the median of a major highway part. That would be a good haul for me, a good hour just to get there. Shame I wasn't closer, my 6.5' D-max bed and 16' 14K trailer will haul a lot in one trip.

Saw that a few weeks ago. Must have been 10-12 feet high for a mile. All tree length. Crele just blows it into the woods. There also doing it for rt9

Lots of trees down on back roads and non-major routes too. I pass by a bunch each day. My wife just sent me a text that a lot were downed on her work route. If I had something other than a minivan to transport I could easily have a multiple years' supply.

Yes, I have seen this, got stuck in the traffic. Really over kill. They are just chipping EVERYTHING Some really nice wood in there. Truely a waste. I for one will not take a chance scrounging on any highway in CT. Too many peeps with their heads up their ass, no amount of BTUs are worth my life.

Saw that row of chipper fodder all lined up on the highway median today. Butt ends aligned and nothing trimmed. It looks to be destined to be composted on site for sure.

@Arnoldnorth, Have you tried asking tree services if they will give you wood. My parents live in North Haven and have been able to get wood dumped in their yard. My uncle also. (For free). It is a lot easier than constantly being on the prowl for BTUs.

They butchered the Merritt Parkway. That used to be such a pretty trip. Now it looks like a tornado ripped through there. I have a a 3/4 truck, but not taking my chances on a median. if anyone sees anything well off the side where it's safe, I'm in. You cut, I'll haul.

Drove on 91 on Christmas Eve and saw all the sawdust on one side as I headed south and then all the trees lined up on the other side when I headed back north.

Hard to look at!
