If you are using a rear heat shield, does the thermostat assembly (not the door) need the cover? The unit I used to have had no shield, but had a cover. The unit I just purchased, which is in better shape, has a rear heat shield, but no cover. I am thinking the shield will act the same way the cover did.
 
No cover needed with the heat shield in place
