I often read posts where people are trying to compare their heat needs to that of people in other parts of the country. And also discussions about how much colder or warmer a winter has been compared to typical.

This site, which I just stumbled upon, might be of interest to you: http://pnwpest.org/US/

I've only looked at it briefly. It's not heating degree days, but more a measurement where higher numbers implies more mild temperatures. Also, upon further inspection, it only seems to be of help to those in more moderate climates.

. . . and for you folks in Ohio, OARDC (Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center) of THE Ohio State University developed a phenology calendar based on growing degree days (GDD). Just type in your (Ohio) zip.

It's about time for silver maple bloom in this part of the state.

It's a good resource when you want to treat a pest you can base your treatment/s on phenological events with a similar GDD. It's more accurate than treating by calendar dates, as phenological events can shift from year to year and region to region depending on GDD.
