Delivery guy tips, how much?

Curious as to what most people tip the pizza (or Chinese, or whatever) delivery guy.
I'm about a mile from town, short trip, usually ordering $20-$25 worth of food, I try to tip about $5.
I have no idea what the average is. I'm in central NH, college town. What's the average tip you give?

$5. Price doesn't matter. He's making the same effort to deliver $20 in food, or $100. A waitress gets tipped a %, because we assume that a larger bill equates to more work on her part.

$5 dollars seems like an awful lot for a pizza deliver guy. I think $3 is more appropriate.

My three year old son and I usually get our haircut together and I usually tip the lady at the hair salon $5 per haircut and double that if it's around the holidays.

$3-5 is okay for a $20 order or so. I know from experience that MANY people don't bother to tip delivery drivers anything. Of course those people are jerks. I was always happy with $2 but that was 10 years ago. Fine it was 14 years ago.

I don't think its necessary to tip based on a percentage. Its the same work whether its 1 pizza or 3 pizza's. But if an order is really big then a larger tip is definitely appropriate.

Went to Easter buffet on Sunday, nice place in Newport RI, big party of us (10 adults 4 children), they included a 20% gratuity. It was a buffet! All they did was clear dirty plates and seriously neglect the Bloody Mary and mimosa deliveries.

I figure they don't make a lot of cash, there' wear and tear on the car, and I like to keep them in good graces. Plus- if the tips start to add up to a lot of money then it's a sign that I order out too much

Was the food at least decent? I find that about 90% of the restaurants out there are a complete waste of money. We rarely go out to eat at new places any more.

Sorry, that's just wrong. Some jobs, tipping isn't appropriate or necessary, but others (waitressing, hairdresser, pizza delivery) the pay is low (sometimes even less than minimum wage), based on the expectation of a tip if the service is good.

$5 is my normal pizza delivery tip. And if possible, I always give it in cash even if I use plastic to pay for the food.

Agreed. If people don't want to tip for those services they should be prepared to pay more for them so a higher wage can be paid.

If that's your criterion, then your list of folks you feel ought to get a tip needs to be a whole lot longer.

I don't have anything delivered other than mail. We don't tip the mailman either. Get out of your house and go get the pizza yourself. I also refuse to sit in drivethrough lanes. Oh and I loathe self checkout isles.

You know, even when the service is poor, I still tip (a little,instead of normal) but on the other hand when service is better, I increase the normal amount. , And if the service is real poor, I will mention it as I pay the bill; the setting had dirty silverware, lipstick on coffee cup, waited too long for service, etc. I mean, they ask as you're paying "How was everything?" right?
Normally don't order anything delivered, but if I do, there is usually a tip included; typically by rounding off the amount. And I don't mean to the next dollar!

Tipping is a gray area. Started with the bell hop ,extended to waitresses now everyone wants a tip. Your checkout girl at the grocery probably makes min wage. Do you tip her a % of your grocery order.Not hardly. Do you tip anyone at Mcdonalds? BK? Subway,Dollar store,Wm?? Or a raft of other Min wage places. When i worked at an auto parts store in my youth and put peoples $3 Wiper refills on in the rain ,i never once got a tip. I tip delivery guys,but wont patronize a place that includes it on every bill. Thats just rude.

Always a fat tip to the pizza man-at least 5 bucks, + courtesy. I delivered tons of pies, got stiffed / dissed lot, and three guys I worked with over the years got robbed. Tough gig.

At least 20% to waitstaff unless they are brazenly bad. Insanely busy is not "bad". If they're rockin', give it up.

People that have an "I don't tip waitstaff" policy should always announce that before the service starts.
