digital thermostat on CB1200i?

I have not pulled the trigger on the purchase of a Quad CB1200i yet, but it is getting close. I believe that the unit comes with a cheap looking plastic manual thermostat. Not that this thing won't do the job, but I was wondering whether I might be able to throw a not as chincy appearing piece of equipment on my wall, in the form of a digital thermostat.

1) can it be done?
2) should it be done? (Meaning, sometimes things can be done, but it is not suggested)
3) if so, can I use something like this?:

4) Finally, these digital t-stats require the wiring be connected correctly on the back. Are they color coded like other heating/cooling systems so I can match color for color or label with label?

Yes, if your stove can use one of the manual "cheapy" wall stats, it will work off a digital.

IMO, though, is that if you're going to replace w/ a digital, why not get a programmable one? The one in your link is NOT programmable. Very inexpensive programmable ones are available at HD and Lowes for $20-25.

I have a Lux unit that cost me $20.

The connections on the stat that you need are just the R & W. If there's a jumper wire, remove it.

I guess I was just wondering about the feasibility in general. Maybe a programmable will be something I do once I get used to the stove, it's performance, and rid myself of the cheap plastic unit. Thanks for the info on the R & W wiring and jumper.

Thanks Macman. I bought a Honeywell RTH2300 today (5+2 day programmable) for $30. My local electric utility has a rebate going on where they'll give up to a $50 Visa card rebate if you purchase an Energy Star qualified programmable thermostat... Whee, free for me.

Installing tonight. Should lend itself to be more accurate than the OE Quadra-fire manual one - not necessarily with the accuracy, rather my ability to adjust and see the actual temperature. The factory ones are somewhat vague to look at and requires a slight bit of estimating when setting a temperature.

Great deal Apple. Wish my electric co. had that stuff, but I have to remember I live in NY...aaaarrrrggghhh.

Just remember, if the stat has a jumper wire, remove it. And it doesn't matter which wire goes to what connection on the stove.....the stat is just a switch.

You'll enjoy having the stove come on before you get up in the morning, or before you come home in the afternoon, and saving pellets at night.

BTW, any update on when you're getting the stove? Maybe some pics of the install & stat for the forum. Like we always say, no pics=it really didn't happen! :lol:

OOOOPSIE! :red: I remember now. OK, then how about a pic of the stat when you get it installed?? :lol:

Keep us informed how the stat install & how well it works.

Don't forget, mount it at least 10-15' from the stove, and NOT directly in line with the hot air blowing out.....it will fool the stat into thinking the whole room is warm.

Are you running your stove on high? perhaps you could try medium to slow the cycle down...also some programmable thermostats allow you to adjust the anticipator to allow a longer cycle.

Yep, my Lux allows up to 9 degrees "swing". I have my stove stat set at 2.

Marbleguy, I'd try 2 or 3 on the swing on yours and see if that helps.

Swap took 2 minutes and then another 5-10 to program the t-stat enough to test it with the stove. All is working fine. No issues at all. Stat is about 20 feet from the stove.

On the subject of thermostats can i install a generic thermostat on a Whitfield profile 20? It talks about a thermostat hookup but when i bought my stove i never got one. What brand and model ( not to many functions) should i buy.

Did you insulate the liner for the pellet insert? In the first pic looks like I see a liner with foil faced insulation wrapped around it? Pellet liners don't need insulation...
