Castine baffle is a little difficult to wrestle in & out, so my question is...
If I were to do one or two midseason topdown chimney cleanings would there be any harm in leaving the small amount of soot on top of the baffle plate to burn off later? Or any other short-cuts for a quick cleaning. (top exit, straight class a chimney w/ no cleanouts).

No, remove the top. It's gasketed and designed to be removed to facilitate cleaning.
