I just got my p61 last week and the dealer installed what appears to be just the ember protection based on the receipt. I do not see anything in the manual or on the attached label that describes the thermal requirements (only says "non-combustible"). Now I am also worried... I can hardly go yell at the dealer if it's not a part of the Harman manual I suppose.

You do not have a P61 you have a P61A different model call and check.

The fire marshals report would be a better source. Hopefully CT will post some of the details.

The roosters are on my list of spring projects. I think I'm going to keep the more docile one of them and send the other two to "freezer camp" as you put it When summer rolls around and the windows are open I might be a little less tolerant of the noise. I'm also thinking of raising a few meat birds. We'll see.

I believe the new P61s have a slightly different base design. My manual stated a min r value. Build date is July of 2011.

OK, thanks. Mine is a Jan 2013 build. When I slide my hand under the base of the stove, the tiles on my hearthpad are damn warm. I fired off the question to Harman a few minutes ago, FWIW. I opened my big yap and now the wife's concerned as well.

I am almost certain someone on here said that they changed the base design by creating more of an air space under the stove. You might have luck doing a search for it.

I heard back from Harman, where I asked about the P61A's hearthpad thermal requirements, and here's the reply:
"There have been modifications made to the “p series” models to enable them to be installed on non combustible surfaces. There is no longer a 0.45 R value required for floor protection."

Please remember all hearth pad requirements are particular to each stove, what is valid for a current stove is not always valid for an older stove of the same model nor will it necessarily be valid for a future stove of the same model, things are always changing and changes may or may not apply to older stock.

I am certain that it doesn't apply to older stock, since you can find manuals online that state the 0.45R requirement as mentioned previously. When did this change occur? I don't know because Harman gave me a one-liner.
The point is that there have been posts similar to mine where the thermal requirements were not detailed as they had been in the past, which was a cause of concern. The good news is that it wasn't an oversight (my worry of course), but that at some point (again, do not know when) they altered the design such that there was no longer a need to detail the specification beyond "non-combustible". Please do continue to read your installation manual carefully

My local dealer doesn't stock the p61 or p61a, so I can't go and compare the design of my 2005 stove to a newer model- that would be too easy. I'm sure that the design and manual specs have changed. I guess what I am surprised by is that no one here had the same problem I had, or a worse one.

Lower or eliminate? The ember protection board my dealer originally sold me said r=0. I believe they eliminated the r value requirement.

This has been the busiest February I hve ever had in the history of my business. Not an excuse, just a reason. I will definately go tertomorrow.
