Question:
We are down wind from a wind burning stove with two children who have asthma. What can we do to help prevent the smoke small coming into our house. Our neighbor has everything up to code?
Answer:
Tough one when prevailing winds are headed your way. The best idea, although expensive, would be for your neighbor to purchase a newer clean burning stove. When burned correctly, these units produce almost no smoke. If he has an older stove, then the smoke output is much more dependent on his habits. If he burns long slow fires then the stove will constantly produce smoke. Hotter and shorter fires will burn cleaner. If he is a reasonable person and understands your dilemma, then perhaps he will take steps to correct his burning habits. Lastly, I think there may be laws concerning this in Ma. I've heard stories of smoke police who, instead of giving tickets, provide the homeowner with tips on correct burning procedures.
