Educate the Newbie

I am a newbie when it comes to trees and Firewood. I’m cutting up this fallen tree on my property which I believe is Ash and I’d like to know what exactly does the darker interior circle indicate.

Does it indicate anything about the quality of the wood for use in a wood stove?

Any schooling that will help me do the job better and more efficiently would be greatly appreciated.

It could be ash. I don't see any rot. Ash is pretty good firewood, easy to split.

Lots better than poplar or white pine, not as good as white oak.
