If they're under 3 I agree. Older than 3 and they should've been taught how to be around it during operation (barring any special needs that may apply).
My niece just turned 3 and she understands that when we say "be careful near the stove" it means stop and pay attention to surroundings. Same with stairs.
I'll keep that in mind. So far he has been pretty diligent in keeping aware of it.
