If you have a six year old I recommend a fence of some sort around the stove.
Why? A six year old should understand the concept of HOT by now and should also understand that rough housing around the stove can be dangerous.

If they're under 3 I agree. Older than 3 and they should've been taught how to be around it during operation (barring any special needs that may apply).

My niece just turned 3 and she understands that when we say "be careful near the stove" it means stop and pay attention to surroundings. Same with stairs.
