after doing much research here........i got a 25pvdc........man.........what a nice unit.......heats my whole house on med.............anyone that's on the fence should not hesitate.......the dvd service manual was excellent........pretty much an entire teardown in video format........great idea........3 questions for ya mike
1. is there a hopper extension?
2. can i mix in a "little" corn just for giggles to see what happens.
3. why is the wear place tipped up at such an angle? after a night of burning there is a pretty good pile of ash right in front of the auger. it pretty much restrict the burn area to a little spot right in front of the auger. can i modify the wear plate so the incoming pellets will push the debris off the wear plate into the ash pit and still burn ok?

oh ya, i am a tinkerer in case you were wondering.......

just got in , yep dropped a nifty little +3 (74) on em today. 1 birdie 4 bogies. fun day played with a good friend of mine. anyway , im back

as for the questions
1. no , we do not have hopper extensions
2. i would stay away from corn , can be more nuisance than its worth in pellet stoves not designed for corn.
3. the slope is there to allow air to hit the fire at optimum angle, if its flattened out it changes the air path and doesn't allow as complete a combustion. as for the buildup , i run the same stove , and once a day , i take my shovel from my hearth kit , and scoop that ash cake up and drop to the side, i do not shut the unit down to do so , just open the door, scoop it up , and drop to the side, close the door and off it goes on its merry way burning. takes all of about 20 seconds. then every so many days (depending on how high i have it turned up , i shut down the unit and vac out the ash, takes maybe 5-7 minutes , wipe the glass with dry rag ,reload, turn on and off she goes again.


P.S. dont modify the wear plate , trust me , ive played with em by the dozen , it wont help. its at optimal like it is.

Even on Quad units made to burn corn (and pellets) it is a huge mess. I would stay away from it unless you are getting a killer price.

Sounds like a good modification possibility here. Maybe add a little pusher to clear off the plate automatically every 24 hrs.

see...........that's why i bought an englander.........i have my own personel tech right here........and he is not located in India!..........thanks Mike.......one quickie and i'll leave you alone.......the book says to turn the stove off before loading the pellet hopper.........i did that at first.......and of course i forget to hit the "on" button and........flameout..........any danger with opening the hopper and feeding it while it's running..........thanks men

there really isnt, its just the books have to be written 'anally retentive" in regards to safety of operation , and if you stuck your finger in the auger you'd probably have to go around front and wait for it to come out.

now the hopper must be closed during operation, but briefly opening to feed is ok as long as you follow these rules:

do not overfill the hopper so the lid wont shut
do check after filling for debris, pellets etc.. on the gasket and remove so it will seal (this will also keep the gasket from getting messed up )
make sure you latch it back down securely before walking away!!

with all the crap thats on tv these days looking at the fire is probably more intertaining , i still do that a lot myself. its relaxing although i like a good wood fire more (cause you can play with it) ive set in front of the stove several times and just watched

Instead of starting a new thread I'll tack on my question, So, a coffee can full of ash in 15 hours is okay? Me and my wife have both had wood stoves in our families since

we were kids, but this year with our own kid we decided a pellet stove might be safer, cleaner and easier to fuel so we went out to home depot and got a pretty good deal

on an englander 25-PDV and 3 Ton of pellets. Well, we've been a bit concerned because when we burn it for 12-15 hours on heat range 1-5 (mixed or constant on one

setting) we get about a coffee can full of ash and some times it will put the fire out at night. We have a friend with a Harmon and he gets a 1/2 inch of talc ash in the

morning, that's the only reason we were concerned maybe the stove is out of tune (running to lean/rich) We tried different pellets, but they only burned a bit hotter and

not much cleaner. If this is how the stove burns that's fine, I like the hearth shovel idea, simple easy and quick. Just want to make sure everything is kosher.

couple things , whats he burning? and where is the rest of the ash going , in the ash pan underneath? harmon units do things a bit differently than we do , but ash is ash and 40 lbs of wood is going to make some. curious where the rest of his ash is ending up

First don't get me wrong, I Like the Englander just fine, and if for a thousand dollars less I just have to clean my stove a few more times, that's fine with me, like I said, I

do have a kid, so my labor rate is is a lot cheaper than a Harmon =) I just want to make sure this is normal operation. He's burning Energex Hardwood pellets, they're the

second pellets we tried. He has an ash pan, the ash is just lighter, which probably is because it is in the ash pan and the ash in the Englander is in front of the fire, which is

why I'm assuming it is denser. I just became concerned when people were telling me they only were cleaning their stoves every few days, and we were cleaning ours a

few time a day. I'll try getting a picture of the ash buildup up if I can.

ok thats fine, yeah this unit does tend to build an ash dam with a lot of pellets , mine does too, i usually just ease the door open , take my ash shovel from my woodstove hearth kit and scoop the cake out drop it to the side and shut the door, i dont turn the uit off , just dont jerk the door open fast , ease it open , this is somthing i generally do about once a day and it seems to keep from getting too heavy. just have to be "common sense" careful as the unit is hot.

I tried this last night and it worked fine, my wife noticed the smoky smell when I opened the stove but no worse

than when we feed the wood stove. Is there any way to adjust the combustion air? if this was a car I would say

it was running rich, too much fuel and not enough air. Thanks for all the help and suggestion, our wood stove

"scoop" does fit perfect in the burn pot.
