Englander NC-32

Hi y'all, I'm new here. Me and my family just purchased a Englander 32-NC. The wall clearances in the manual list them as "single and double wall connector with unprotected surface" and then lists closer clearances with "single and double wall connector unprotected surface with side shields"

Does anyone know if the side shields are just wall shields with 1" air gap or is it something else?
