Finally the first fire of the season!!!!!!

October the 18th and it finally got cool enough here in Georgia to light the first fire of the season... It dropped down to 41 here last night... Fired up the stove about 11:30 last night when the house started cooling off, I didn't need a very hot fire so I just loaded it full of poplar with 1 medium sized stick of red oak on top... Woke up at 9am this morning, nice bed of coals still in the stove and still hot enough for the blower to be running... Nice and comfortable in the living room and it was 46 outside...

If I ever get sick of burning I'll just dig up past natural gas bills to make myself feel better Pellets (our last stove) were too expensive to use as a sole heat source.

Haven't run the furnace once despite several nights in the 30s thus far It gives me a lot of glee!

I've been holding out as long as I can because this fireplace will be the home of a new Hampton HI300 come late Nov early Dec.

I have made a committment to not use oil heat until Nov 1st. I couldn't hold out any longer because I want to watch the Red Sox in a nice cozy room! Temp has climbed 10 degrees to a cozy 68 vs 58 after a couple hours of burning. Gotta love the 20% efficeincy of a fireplace.

No, I am not running my oil heat so the rest of the house is still 58!

Yowza! I can handle mid 60's, but 58 is a bit cold for me. My wife would intervene if the temp in the house got anywhere close to that low.

Layers! 60 degrees isn't bad with two layers of sweatpants. Makes that morning coffee feel real good when you see steam rising. The oil in my tank is almost gone and it was $4.55 when I bought that 50 gallons in Aug. I am only using this little bit for hot water before I get my next delivery which is around $3.75 or so. I hope I can make it to Nov 1st before turning on the heat. It's about a 25 degree difference between outside air temp and inside air temp. I can get down to about 32 at night before the 55 degree temp setting on the thermostat will kick in.

Counting the days before the new insert gets installed!

We used to live at 58 until our daughter was born. It was cold, but we got by with blankets, sweats, and even hats. Not anymore (wife still says that the stove was the best things that I talked her into). Its really not that bad, just a different deal than wood. Only real benefit was the fact that now we don't pay for oil and will open windows. Had it open last night and slept like a baby.

I'm out all day sunday draining down the water lines of my comercial 6,000 ft sq building cause my ex-tennent left it vacant with a big hole in my income where his rent check used to be & no gas or electric in the building with the property tax bill continuing unabated.

my remaining tennant needs 1 cold water line going through the cold & unpowered section of the building, just to make things nearly "Mission Impossiable."

I run a special cpvc plastic water line for him & tomorrow , whenever I wake up , I have to heat tape the 60 foot line ,then insulate with fiberglass & finally vapor wrap with plastic.

last night, I fought with more rust frozen valves that were last turned in 1960 than I ever want to remember & I get home at 3 am to a cold cold cold house.

I lite the wood stove at 3 am but here its 8am & the house is juust begining to warm up.
The heat must transfer by osmosis, or what ever method is more slower than that,from the 95 deg basement to the 63 deg first floor to the 50 deg second floor & me freezing & the while.

Well something is finally starting to occur as the thermometer on the second floor reads 57 now instead of 50 at 8:12 am.

Its a good thing I left a 1 burner propaine camp stove going in the comercial building because it went down to 24 deg last night & I found the building had dropped from 65 deg to 48 deg on my 7:30 am check & would
have frozen if not for the camp stove.

Well, almost time to go to my icy bed right after I refuel my turtlewood stove.

What is a turttle wood stove you ask??
It is the knid of stove that you need to burn 24/7 because if you lite it off at 3 am, at 8 am ,its still too damn cold to go to bed.

And here I thought soap stone stoves were slow! jokes on me!

Those fan forced hot & cold air registers are begining to look better & better to me.

I didn't think I needed them ,but then I never let the house grt cold before during the heating
season. Of course ,it was 55deg yesterday so who was expecting 24 at night.

I think I need to remember to keep a good head of heat in the house & not let it cool down again until spring. Lucky I just scored 125 free pallets last week on top of the 4 cords of wood that I scrounged & split for "free" during the summer.

Them pallets are probably = to 2 to 3 cords more. Anyone want some free used,slightly bent and only burned once(to take the temper out) nails? Guaranteed to bend in half within 3 hammer hits.

Watch when you load that pallet wood........ It um!! burns real well.

I had the NC-13 back at the other house and made the mistake of filling it up. It looked like the pits of hell itself. Stove temps pegged the meter at 690F
I've loaded the NC-30 with a bunch of lath strips and it did the same thing but they just don't last like the pallet wood. So watch how much you pack in in one shot.
