Fireback Question

Hi-

Could one use a fireback as a heat shield for a small wood stove?

I'm thinking 'no', but thought I'd ask as my wife doesn't like the look of any of the commercially available heat shields.

Are you talking about the old-skool cast-iron plates that folks used to stand up in the back of their fireplace? If so, why not? Any metal shield spaced 1” off the wall can be used, as far as I know, I haven’t seen anything stating it must be a specific maximum thickness of sheet metal.

The main issue I see, other than that of supporting that amount of weight on standoff’s off a wall, is their size. They tend to be quite narrow.
