Fireplace: 3/4 inch gap between firebox and brick face

Good afternoon all,

Ive used wood stoves for years, but this home is the first Ive had with a fireplace. The flue tile is clean and all the grout is in place. The question I have is there seems to be a gap between the firebox and the brick face of about 3/4 inch (pictured). Is this supposed to be here? What is the safest way to close this gap if it needs it?

first used expanded metal rolled to press into the gap to form a matrix, then used refractory cement to fill the gap, then a skim layer of extreme temperature fireplace silicone. Worked great and still in place
