We are starting a renovation of a brick fireplace with a raised brick hearth. The current brick hearth is flush with the firebox. If we put granite on top of the brick hearth it will no longer be flush. Is that OK or could that cause a problem with the granite (potential for heat to crack it)? Should we remove the top course of bricks and then build up mortar or concrete so that the granite is flush with the existing firebox?
