Fireplace Transformation

Hi everyone,
I know many of you are as (or more) obsessed with stoves and fireplaces as I am. Have to share a recent overhaul of our painted brick fireplace, Jotul insert stayed the same.
The stone is called Spring Lake by R Stone, and is a combination of ledge, strip, and mosaic sizes. The mantel was locally "sourced" on Long Island, and is a genuine railroad tie that once had the Long Island Rail Road running over it.
If anyone locally is looking to have similar work done, i was extremely happy with my contractor!

Was the new stone laid right over top of the old brick with mortar?

Durock over the brick, stone adhered to the Durock.

And how was the Durock adhered to the brick? Tapcons? Mortar?

Does the tie smell? Most I've been around seem like they would indoors. Curious. It all looks nice.

Both. Not sure exactly what kind of adhesive, it was black. Screws to hold in place while it dried. Gave it a couple days to set before rocking

It definitely did have an odor, especially when i cut it to size. A few coats of poly seems to have sealed it in

FWIW adhesive is not recommended for hearth work near the heat of an insert or stove.

Hopefully it wont off gas too much when it heats up to 140-150° when you have your insert running full tilt with the fan on high.
