First aid item suggestion.

While putting a first aid kit together, I checked off the usual things on my list. One thing that I'm putting in there that isn't usual is super glue. Its one thing to have a major injury and need quick stop and gauze, but if your like me, you get plenty of little cuts that don't stop work, but certainly hurt while your working. Super glue the cut shut and it will feel a lot better.
I work in a metal shop and get little cuts regularly. The hands start feeling like hamburger at times. The super glue seems to seal off nerves and make it feel a lot less painful or annoying. Its one less distraction. Plus, it will help keep the cut clean without the bulky bandaide sticking to everything but your finger.

Anybody else have an unusual item in the First aid kit?

I was told by a old logger who worked by himself to keep some Maxi Pads in your saw kit.Usually saw cuts are big and nasty.One of those with some duct tape can keep pressure on a cut if you still have to drive to get help.

+1 on the Maxi's. Excellent for large, gaping wounds. They are sterile and super absorbent.
...and duct tape. Never go anywhere without at least one roll!

I have a piece of rope for a tourniquet and a 6 inch piece of steel rod to twist/tighten it. I actually keep these in the pocket in my chaps--figured that's when I'd likely need it. I learned about the super glue thing about a year ago--it is nothing short of amazing. I did a little bit of research on this, and it turns out that medics in Vietnam used super glue on the wounded.

+ whatever on the Maxi Pads. Growing up my Dad, a Vietnam medic and EMT, had a jump kit (well it was more like a metal toolbox with a bunch of medical supplies in it) . . . always had those wicked thick Maxi Pads. As a teen I always wondered what type of medical emergency he was responding to . . .

As mentioned . . . great for bleeding control.

Oh yeah, add some Benadryl . . . this time of year it should not be an issue . . . but if you ever get stung while a fair distance from help and discover then and there that you are highly allergic to bee stings taking some Benadryl might buy you some time.

Also, disregard the Facebook posts that some of you might have seen about "Cough CPR" . . . it's real . . . but not all that useful. A better thing would be to know the signs and symptoms of a heart attack . . . and carry some chewable baby aspirin. Again, it's not an end-all, be-all cure (much like the Benadryl), but it may buy you a bit of time until professional help arrives.

If cutting alone and you have service, a cell phone in the pocket is a good idea - not 'first aid' I guess, but being able to call for help in an emergency could be the life saver. Cheers!

I keep th Mxi Pads handy. This brought sme laugs from my daughters over th years... "Dad's First Aid kit handles anything that bleeds!" I am currently upgrading to the Mil Spec bandages that clot instantly. Those who have used them say thy burn like Hell but they'll help keep you here longer .

Great suggestions! It looks like I'm going to steal some of my wife's pads soon. I never would have thought of that, but it makes sense!
The cell phone is a definite must. I put mine in the "tool pocket" of my chaps so it is easy to get to in case of bad things happening.
Jake- thanks for the info on the cough CPR. Good to know.
Bad Wolf- maybe you should have an extra bow tie in your kit.... because their cool!
