Hey folks,
I have an Earth Stove BV4000C with a cat. It's been really cold recently and I've been running the stove continuously for a week, and have had the stove for 4 years with no issues. Tonight I went went to load the stove before bed and still had quite a bit of wood going in the firebox, but I figured I could fit 2 more pieces. I only had one piece of wood inside the house so I opened the cat, put the one piece of wood in, then went out on to the porch to fetch more. While I was loading up my wood barrel I noticed a red glow in the yard beside my porch. When I walked to the edge of the porch I was shocked to see flames coming out of the chimney cap. I have never noticed this before in the entire time I've had the stove. I hustled back inside and closed the cat and shut the air flow down and the flames went away. I did not hear any roar or odd noises that I've heard of people saying they hear when they've had a chimney fire and I cleaned my chimney a month ago at the beginning of the burning season. Also, I've only burnt well seasoned oak.
What do you guys think? I'm going to let the fire go out tonight and inspect as soon as the snow melts off my metal roof, but is this something to worry about or somewhat normal given the circumstances. If nothing else it made me very nervous. The last thing I want to do is burn the house down!
Thanks for the input!
