Yes, the damper will reduce the strength of the draught (vacuum) pulling air through the stove.

Blocking the intake was a fail. Looked to be working really well but the fire later smouldered and went out before all fuel was burnt.

Trying another top down style fire now. Will see how it goes.

May look into a damper after that.

Top-down starting will warm up the flue the fastest.
