I bought some sheet metal to make a block of plate at the damper and I believe the metal is galvanized. Is it bad to use galvanized metal for this. I have heard that galvanized metal gives off bad gases when heated with a torch.

Thats what I used galvanized sheet metal.

When melting under the heat of a wielder the gas released from Galvanized sheet metal are bad. If your block off plate starts to melt the gas given off is the least of your problems.
