I called my insurance company, they said they had no problem with a pellet stove, just asked me to have it professionally installed. I'm considering a Summers Heat, but I called a couple of local dealers to ask if they would install and received no call back. How would I go about finding a competent installer?>>

Try your local HVAC company. They should be able to perform a proper install following the directions in the stove manual.

You might want to put your general location in your profile and we may be able to suggest someone on this board that does installations in your area.

I would be worried if I bought a stove at a dealer and they didn't know anyone that could install it!! Imagine what would happen if you needed it serviced!

I agree but the Summer's Heat stove is one of the branded Englanders for Lowes or HD so no dealer support.

That's a good point MrAlias, Marlboro NY midway between Newburgh and Poughkeepsie. Will do my profile for sure.

Didn't realize...OP said he called a couple of dealers so I assumed (You know how that goes) he was talking about stove shops, not box stores. My Bad!;em

Tells you what kind of folks the local dealers are though, huh? You'd think the money from an install would be just as green as the money from a stove sale.

Geezer, Go talk to Bill over at heat revival in pleasant valley . Guy is one of the best people when it comes to stoves , I have been dealing with him for along time. He has a great rep and is just good people. He's like 15min from the bridge. Go check out his place and have a talk with him.

Use the NFI web site (broken link removed to http://nficertified.org/pages_industry/industry-1.cfm) NFI = National Fireplace Institute. Most of the people I have seen take these tests in order to earn the certificate have many years of hearth experiance. My father owned an HVAC company and I beleive an HVAC technician is qualified to install a pellet stove; however I believe the NFI certified technician is better equipped to handle any suprises that come up during the install.
Some dealers do not want to install stoves they dont sell because getting parts for them can be very difficult and cost both the dealer and the customer more than it should. Imagine the dealer getting to your home with the pellet pipe they would need to install the stove, like any other stove they sell, and find out the stove you purchased else where needs some kind of a special adaptor. These things do happen. If it is a stove the dealer sells they know about this adaptor way ahead of time. If this is a stove they do not deal with they may learn this at the time of install costing both you and the dealer time and money. if you want a dealer to install a pellet stove they do not sell emailing them a copy of the manual and asking them that way may be better. Purchasing your stove through the people that install is your best interest at the time of install and for future servicing needs.

Thanks Santa Fe, I did check with HVAC companies, and found a couple that would install, but with the money they are talking ($650-$850) better I go with a person that lives and breathes them, like heat revival. After all is said and done there will be video, if the site allows.

I've installed 5 pellet stoves, 1 for myself and 4 for customers of mine. They are a pretty simple install, just need to use common sense and high quality pellet vent. My stove is an Englander, basically a Summer's Heat with a different name. If you'd like I could shoot over to where you are and give you an honest estimate for your install. I can also give you the names and phone numbers of the customers I did the install for, that's definitely not a problem.
Just a thought

Darryl, you in CT?

My insurance company wanted a CO from the building inspector or fire marshal. That makes more sense anyway. Not all the "professional" are up to par. Ask them about that and see what they say.
First comes the building permit along with insurance certificates from your installer, then the stove install, the CO from the building inspector, and a copy to your insurance company.
