Got our wood burning insert ordered over the weekend! *w00t!* It should be arriving at the dealers next week and then it'll be installed on 11/01. Temps dipped down to 38 degrees last night and we're only making it to the upper 50's this week.

I decided to go with the Lopi Republic 1750i. I was initially looking at the EnerZone 2.3i, but based on the odd taper of the fireplace opening, it would not fit. The Lopi is one the dealer recommended and will fit with no issues at all. Sounds like it's an awesome insert and my wife and I are excited to have it installed.

Not sure if you guys remember in my intro thread that I posted a few weeks ago, but we have two wood burning fireplaces in our single-story ranch home. The main one is in the living room. The second one is in our unfinished basement and we won't be using it anytime soon. This is our first home and just purchased in April of this year. Unfortunately, we have some awkward negative air pressure going on and the basement gets filled with smoke when the upstairs fireplace is ignited. We are having the main chimney swept and cleaned this Friday. I plan on simply installing one of those chimney balloons recommended by someone here on the Hearth as it sounds like that would do the trick at a minimal cost.
Since joining this forum two and a half weeks ago, I've purchased the wood burning insert, a Rockforge 10 lb. sledge hammer, an Estwing 5lb. wedge, a Truper 8lb. maul and a Husqvarna 445 chainsaw that I found on eBay for a helluva deal and could not pass it up.

...and yesterday, my wife and I went for a hike at a local nature preserve and all I kept thinking about was all the wood that could be stacked in our backyard. Next Spring, we're going to build a wood shed in the backyard. I told my wife all the cool kids are doing it. I think she bought it.

Many thanks to all of you for the information, the photos and the insane amount of inspiration that I have to live up to one day. Best. Forum. Ever.

All you are missing is a Fiskars X27 splitting axe. Get one and you will find that maul left in the truck most of the time!

Getting the same stove installed next week. I agree these guys are a great help. I got all my toys earlier this year. The fiskars is a great. my wife doesnt buy all the cool kids are doing it yet..... Lol

YES! The Fiskars X27 is next on my list... I gotta start focusing now on the most important thing: firewood.
I wish I hadn't started so late in the year, but live 'n learn. I'm going to make the best of what I've got.

Fortunately / Unfortunately, we had a tornado touch down just west of where I live in August.
A co-worker of mine has a lot of old trees on their property that were downed during the storm so I'm going to scrounge after the best of the best this weekend and try and get a good stockpile from them.

Something about this post struck a chord. Cheers to many years of fire burning happiness with your new insert.

Thank you! The notion of being more self-sufficient is always something that has interested me and I believe this is one of the first steps in the right direction.
My goal is to get off the thermostat crutch and heat our home using firewood. :)

Congrats! We have the same insert and love it. It "acts" more like a freestanding stove than an insert, in my opinion - sticks onto the hearth by a respectable amount so you can cook on it or use without the blower in power outages, etc. We left the surround off which ended up appealing to me more (I still have the surround in a box, there goes $100 or so) Nice big window, decent sized firebox, works like a charm, we love it. Now you need to get yourself some super cedars and dry wood and you'll be on easy street.

Hopefully you'll have a good wood supply to get the best experience of what that stove can do. You'll never own another house without a woodstove.....I know I won't

I really appreciate all the replies, you guys! I honestly can't find a bad review of this insert. It's costing us a lot up front, but I know we'll more than make up the cost in the cash we'll save on our heating/electric bill.

As for the wood, I've never chopped or split wood before in my entire life. We took down an old Birch Tree in our front yard that was leaning quite a bit towards our home. We chopped it down in May and I split it a few weeks ago. I'm kicking myself now for not taking the time to split it sooner. I honestly enjoyed it and man, it was a helluva work out, too! I can see now that obtaining and hoarding wood is a year 'round event... not just something that takes place in the Fall. I'll be ready next season. :)

I'm looking forward to going out to my co-workers land this Saturday to take down a few downed trees they lost in a storm. I'm hoping to improve upon my wood stack this weekend, although like you guys have mentioned - I doubt it will be anywhere near ready this year, but I really am enjoying the learning process!

You're hooked just like the rest of us, a good weekend for me now is cutting and splitting some wood. While you have access to some free wood (I remember the tornado that came through here, wood everywhere) stock up all you can get and try to get 3 years ahead, these stoves love dry wood. Good luck, you cant go wrong with a Lopi.

How's this stove working out? PICS yet?!
