Can anyone suggest a grate size and height for a masonry fireplace that has just had its propane insert removed from, and which will hopefully serve as an old-fashioned wood-burning fireplace, at least for awhile? Comments on the advantages and disadvantages of particular designs also appreciated.

The firebox measures 36 inches wide at front, 25 inches wide at rear, 23 inches deep, and 30 inches high. Thanks.

Height and design are really a matter of choice. Really you don't even need one you can just burn on the floor or andirons if you want. But get one that fills up the hearth fairly well.

If you are thinking about a fireback allow 6" or so of depth

Finally starting to look more seriously for the fireback . . .

What does it mean to "allow 6" or so of depth? 6" between the FB and the rear wall of the fireplace?
