When the damper is closed and the secondary combustion is happening at the rear bottom of the stove, is it just the smoke that is being drawn down, or is the flame sucked down and back as well?

I'm installing a new stove for 2 reasons: 1 - heat 2 - ambience-like to relax in the evening and be mesmerized by the flames produced by a beautiful (cast iron) stove. There's no point in burning an Oakwood if I can't see the flames!

Thanks for your input!

I believe it is a downdraft stove. You will not see much flame for 75% of the burn cycle.
