When after burn is engaged do you see an active flame burning above logs or do you have most of the flame being sucked in by the after burn chamber in the back of the stove?

Does it appear black inside with the occassional swoosh of the secondary burns with hovering flame activity?
 
It all depends on how much air you are giving it. With the air wide open you well see some flames. With the air shut down you see a glow in the back with some out gassing flames now and again.
