I know there is a lot posted on this topic, but will ask anyway as didn't completely see the answer. We're getting a HearthStone Clydsdale insert put into out existing masonry fireplace. We have a 19 inch tile hearth in front. We want to have the Clydesdale stick out enough to have a half size water pot to be able to sit on the stove (and to get some extra radiant heat. This will make our hearth a bit too short. The dealer we are getting it from said we could use a solid sheet metal piece to extend the hearth and meet code. We will only need about 6-8in more extension into our room (solid wood floor. From what I've read on this site, it sounds like that may not be enough?? or is it?? From reading the Clydesdale 1841 manual, it sounds like we need a minimum R1 value. Is sheet metal sufficient? If not is something like this HY-C 18" x 48" Type 2 Hearth Extender from Woodland Direct ok? It has an R1.5 value. Only issue is it that it is 7/16" thick and our hearth is flush with the floor. If either of these solutions would work, do they need to be attached to the floor?

Our fireplace opening is 33 3/4" w x 26 1/4" h. Hearth is 19" d x 66 7/8" w. We had an older model wood stove (VC Resolute--at least 25 yrs old) sitting in front of the fireplace with a large stone that was notched to fit around the stove and provide clearance. The stone is about 18" w with a 1.5" thickness. This was in the house when we moved in 23 years ago. Anyway, we have a small living room and my wife wanted to gain back some room and be able to watch the fire and thus the reason for the insert. Here's photo as well. Insert not being delivered to end of month.

Good for you for reading the manual! You are correct. Perhaps the dealer thought you had a raised hearth instead of a flush one? Yes, the HyC pad meets the requirement and yes it needs to be attached to the floor, but if you use small screws it can be removed during off season.

Hope you find a good home for the old Resolute. That was a great stove.

Thanks. Why wouldn't a metal plate without the backing suffice? Not enough R value?

Also in chatting with someone at Woodland Direct, they said the HY-C could be attached to the floor with non-skid tape. Do you know of any other simple extenders like the Woodland Direct one?

A metal plate has no R value, it is conductive to heat. That's ok if all that is called for is ember protection, but that is not the case here. Search on hearth extension pad or type 2 hearth extension pad for more options.
