If you have an Englandeer 30-NC, then you are going to need to meet the 30's hearth R requirements of 1.50 (assuming they haven't changed the requirement since last year when I got mine).

I used four layers of Durock Next Gen cement board to meet the 30's R=1.5. Each board has a Rating of .39, so 4x 0.39 = 1.56, then I had a 3/8" of black slate installed on top of that.
