We just refaced our fireplace and had a new hearth installed. It is a standard wood burning fireplace with a fire screen. Now when we have a fire, the hearth near the fire box gets very hot, which we hadn't noticed before. I'm concerned that it wasn't constructed properly.

Is there anything that could have been missed in construction that prevents this heat transfer?

There should be nothing to stop the heat transfer. It should all be on one slab with no combustible materials under it. It may get quite a bit of heat transfer but if it is built correctly it is not an issue
