Hearthstone Clydesdale Install with Pictures

Hello all, I have been searching this site for a while to gather information on a wood stove / insert install. I decided on a Hearthstone Clydesdale insert and got everything (almost) ready to go. Here are some pictures of the first break-in fire and the install before any fires. The inside was almost too pretty to start a fire on those soapstones.

Welcome to the forum spacecowboyIV. That thing looks like it should crank out some serious heat.

Do you plan on cleaning up the blackened brick? It shouldn't be too difficult to do.

Hi I work at a small hearth store. Can you tell me if the top of the insert that sits out onto the hearth get's hot enought to cook or use a steamer? We just started selling Hearthstone and I have been wondering about my clydsdale we have on display. The other question is how far can you open the door on yours? Our door only opens about 45%. Thank you.

Thanks for the great remarks, the surround will be added shortly. I plan to put tile over the brick to make things look a bit cleaner (slate or ceramic?). Years of use as on open fireplace has made it a little rough I know.

btw, the Woodstock stoves are soapstone and they also use some firebrick.

Firebrick is suppose to only protect the firebox and does not retain any heat from what I understand. The soapstone is suppose to retain the heat and release it after the fire goes out. Hearthstone claims 2 additional hours of heat after the fire goes out, but I haven't had a hot fire yet to test it out (we're in the 70's here this weekend).

You will get a boat load of heat out of that beast of burdon. Forget about cooking on the clyde it ain't designed for that,, If your fireplace is exterior facing a block off plate and covering the inside of the firebox with heat rated insulation helps. All that masonry acts as a giant heat magnet right to the outside without one.. Blocking off the flue and insulating the fire box will drive a significant amount of heat into the living space versus loosing it to the outside..

Great looking insert if I do say. Your giong to love the long burn times. Install as far foward as you can. For me it made a noticeable differance

What did you use for insulation and how did you insulate. I covered the back and sides in ceramic blanket insulation and the block off plate (see the white in the pictures, stuff now goes all the way around the sides of the fireplace).
