Hearthstone Craftbury- how do I see if the 'ash grate' is closed?

got my stove home- yeah!! Am reading the booklet...it says to make certain the grate is closed when firing....but the info is a bit lax...there isn't anywhere that shows how to know if the grate is closed or not.
Please- any people who know this stove- HELP!!!
 
Don't you just love it when they put in comments like that and then don't include a picture to accompany the parts list? I haven't run one of these stoves, maybe best to ask the dealer?
 
I have a Craftsbury. The grate slides from front to back. When it is slid forward there are openings that go down to the ash pan area. You probably cant see the openings but you should be able to stick your finger down in there and feel the opening. Slide the grate back and the openings no longer line up so it is closed. I could be wrong, you may need it slide it forward. I cant check it now but slide yours back and forth, you will see what I mean.
