Well, Ive read numerous posts on here about opening and closing the ash grate on the Mansfield. I know Im going to sound totally stupid here but......I do not use the ash removal system on the Mansfield. I scoop them. I know how to open the lower ash removal door, inside that is the ash pan to remove ashes but I find nothing anywhere in my manual about a sliding ash grate to open and close to allow ashes to fall into the lower pan. Mine is obviously open as ashes were found in the pan. Where do I find this lever or mechanism?

IIRC, there is no lever or mechanism.

In the firebox... You use an ash rake to to move the coals back & forth
across the grate so the smaller stuff & ashes fall through to the ash pan.
Then you close the grate.

I know Im sounding totally inept here but looking at a parts diagram, does the grate just sllde on the frame? so I just have to use my poker or whatever in the grate openings and it will slide? Forward and back it look like?
Yes. If you just place your fire poker/ash rake on the grate and push it/pull it, it will move. However, I found a way with mine to flip the ash grate so that it does not move which may be why you are having difficulty. You may have to wait for a fire to die, scoop all of the ashes out, remove your grate, and play around with it.
I prefer not to use the ash pan/grate on my Mansfield. For me, it just seems easier to scoop the ashes from the front of the stove every morning then rake the coals forward.
Not sure about the mansfield but my heritage II has what I would call a plate with rounded lip at the top center of the ash box.I just grab the lip and slide it forward to open and push it back in to close it. Usually there will be chunks between the grate openings and I force it closed. Almost like splitting the chucks in half. Took me a bit the first time I did it.
